Meet Tosha Rains, MSN, APRN, CCRN

Question: Why did you become a nurse?

A: “Interestingly nursing wasn’t my first career choice but, after obtaining a degree in healthcare management, I realized I was more drawn to the clinical side of healthcare prompting me to return to college to complete a nursing degree.”

Q: What is your favorite part of being a nurse?

A: “My favorite part of being a nurse is having the opportunity to serve my community and share my passion for improving the health of those who live here. I enjoy teaching patients about the body and how it works so they can have a greater understanding of their disease state. I think this improves patient buy-in as well as adherence to their care plan.”

Q: What advice would you give an aspiring nurse?

A: “Nursing can be a challenging and demanding profession. Find your passion and develop your ‘why’ to prevent burnout.”

Q: What keeps you motivated during tough shifts?

A: “During tough shifts I like to remind myself that I am often seeing people during what may be some of the worst times of their lives and it is a privilege to be a source of knowledge and hope for them and to provide care to people when they are most vulnerable.”

Q: What has been your best experience at the Hosptial that made you enjoy nursing more?

A: “I had a patient tell me that I saved their life. He was making some health choices that were not congruent with longevity, and one day we had a frank conversation in the clinic. He returned a few months later and reminded me of our conversation and explained how it had affected him. He had dramatically changed his lifestyle and was adherent to his treatment plan. This served as a reminder that the even the smallest things we do may have big impacts on others!”
