Meet Sara Threlkeld, RN, OCN

Question: Why did you become a nurse?

A: “I was inspired to become a nurse by watching nurses who provided exceptional care to my grandfather during some very challenging times. A staff nurse and a hospice nurse made a lasting impression on myself and my family. I have always had a deep desire to help others, and I wanted the opportunity to advocate for patients and to be their source of strength during difficult times.”

Q: What is your favorite part of being a nurse?

A: “My favorite part of being a nurse is knowing that I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I love being able to make connections with people and help. No day is ever the same, and I appreciate the variety and continuous learning opportunities that nursing brings.”

Q: What advice would you give an aspiring nurse?

A: “The nursing profession can be challenging. Remember to give yourself grace. Always take the opportunity to connect with your patients. Always trust your gut. And if you’re comfortable, you’re not growing.”

Q: What keeps you motivated during tough shifts?

A: “My team! I am so grateful to be part of such a resilient, communicative, and compassionate team. Coming together during challenging times makes a huge difference. Everyone knows that they have someone they can depend on.”

Q: What has been your best experience at the Hosptial that made you enjoy nursing more?

A: “I’m not sure that there is one single experience. Overall, I would say looking back over the last 12 years I have worked here and realizing how much I have grown, both personally and professionally. It is humbling to reflect on how I got here, and how many people who have helped mold me into the nurse I am today. Now, it is extremely important to me that I give back to the nursing community through education and leadership. I will always enjoy making a difference in the lives of patients, but I also have a newer found joy in realizing how much I am able to impact the future generation of nurses like others did for me.”
