Meet Shari Billinger, MSN, RN

Question: Why did you become a nurse?

A: “I became a nurse over 30 years ago after working as a phlebotomist for 6 years. During that time, I witnessed firsthand the incredible impact nurses had on patients’ lives. Watching them save lives and provide compassionate care inspired me deeply. I knew I wanted to be part of that, to make a difference in the same way. Becoming a nurse has been one of the most fulfilling decisions of my life.”

Q: What is your favorite part of being a nurse?

A: “My favorite part of being a nurse is mentoring and educating the next generation. As the nurse residency coordinator at Liberty Hospital, I get the privilege to support new nurses as they grow into confident, capable professionals. It’s rewarding to see the nurse residents develop their skills and step into their roles with purpose. I am also fortunate to serve as the educator for our incredible Float Pool nurses and techs. Helping others succeed has become the most meaningful part of my nursing journey.”

Q: What advice would you give an aspiring nurse?

A: “I would say to be as open and flexible as you can be. As a nurse, you’ll face a wide variety of situations, people, and challenges. It can feel overwhelming, but it can also provide incredible opportunities to grow and to build your confidence. Every experience will shape you into the nurse you’re meant to be. Remember that you are never alone.”

Q: What keeps you motivated during tough shifts?

A: “What keeps me going on the tough days is knowing that I’m helping others to become more confident and competent. Seeing that lightbulb moment when something clicks for a new grad or when watching a nurse or tech successfully learn a new process reminds me that the hard days are worth it. I also lean on my colleagues for advice and encouragement during these times.”

Q: What has been your best experience at the Hosptial that made you enjoy nursing more?

A: “One of the most rewarding experiences that makes me love nursing even more is when I’m rounding on the units and former nurse residents take a moment to stop and talk with me, despite their busy shifts. Seeing them thrive in their roles is incredibly inspiring.”
